Middle school is a high-stakes time in a child’s development. As children enter adolescence, relationships with their peers become increasingly important, as does their emerging sense of independence. Students can lose interest in school if they don’t have a sense of connection or agency. To keep middle schoolers engaged, learning needs to be connected to their sense of identity and to their peers. By fostering a culture of collaboration, we help students forge meaningful connections with each other as they learn. Likewise, we help students to explore different roles, so that they can think of themselves as learners, artists, scientists, writers etc. and develop the skills they need to pursue those interests.

We also devote time to addressing students’ social and emotional needs. Adolescence amplifies emotions and we intentionally equip students with skills to navigate the range of feelings that they encounter. This helps to build a safe, nurturing learning environment in which all students can thrive.

The daily schedule varies throughout the week to ensure that students get a balance of instruction in each subject, as well as plenty of time for physical activity and creative expression. Similarly, structured class time is balanced with flexible learning time during which students can select from a range of different endeavours that are connected to the curriculum.
